As a route between the floors of a house, the staircase has a practical function. But it’s also a major feature of a home, and frequently one of the first sights that greets you as you walk through the front door. The position of the stairs is important so it doesn’t hinder circulation through your property, but even if it’s in the right place, the materials used for the various elements of the staircase could be reconsidered in order to boost the flow of light through the house. Practicality aside, its potential to enhance - or detract from - the style of the interior shouldn’t be ignored.
If your staircase isn’t making the grade at the moment, you might choose to replace it with a similar design in the same position, or even change it for a new one and reposition it as part of a more major project. If you don’t want to invest in a brand new staircase, or can’t stretch to the cost of replacing it right now, there’s plenty you could do to improve its appearance, updating the balustrade or painting it. Whatever route you decide to take, the staircase can become an attractive feature in its own right, as well as a functional part of your home.
