Capcom’s Resident Evil series is easily the most prolific videogame licence to appear on the big screen. While the quality of the films ranges from okay to “god, my eyes, my eyes”, the series has generated over $1.2 billion. Paul W S Anderson was involved in the first six live-action films, each starring Milla Jovovich as the original character Alice, while the 2021 series reboot Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City focusses on the characters of the first two games.
Capcom has also released numerous animated adaptations, beginning with the short film Biohazard 4D-Executer in 2000. Resident Evil: Degeneration kicked off a series of projects set in the same universe as the actual games in 2008. This was followed up with Damnation, Vendetta, the Infinite Darkness Netflix series and the forthcoming Resident Evil: Death Island, with Leon S Kennedy starring across the series. In 2022, a poorly received live-action adaptation for Netflix told the tale of Albert Wesker and his twin daughters Jade and Billie.
