PREHISTORIC TEXAS

Exploring the Place Where Mammoths and Dinosaurs Roamed

MAMMOTHS, DINOSAURS, CAMELS, AND BISON ROAMED THE PLAINS OF PREHISTORIC TEXAS. To see the actual fossil remains of mammoths and footprints of dinosaurs, head to Central Texas, to two major sites: the Waco Mammoth National Monument and Dinosaur Valley State Park near Glen Rose. The distance between the two sites is only 71 miles, about a onehour, 20-minute drive.

At one site, you can see fossil remains of several mammoths dating back 65,000 years, and at the other site you can walk in the fossilized footprint track left by dinosaurs about 113 million years ago. Plus, you can learn about the great animals that lived from the Cretaceous Period through the Ice Age and how they were discovered.

In May of 2017 my husband, Andrew, and I headed to Central Texas to participate in the Waco Gem & Mineral Society show and give a lecture at the monthly club meeting. While in Waco, we visited the very impressive Waco Mammoth Site, and before reaching Waco, we stopped at the Dinosaur Valley State Park.

The Waco Mammoth National Monument is an amazing paleontological site with fossil remains of 25 Columbian mammoths and other animals at the actual site of discovery.
The Welcome Center houses a small gift shop that offers souvenirs and a few books. A guided tour of the site begins outside the center.
