What a dramatic headline. I hope I caught your attention. Before you read on, I must point out that the following analysis is based on my own personal experiences. I do not claim to be an expert who knows everything. I am merely trying to make sense of Germany’s rowing team results over the past years. I know hindsight is 20/20 and I am not trying to pin the blame on any one person and so for this reason I have decided (for the most part) not to name names.
To lend myself some credibility I should start by introducing myself. My name is Stephan Riemekasten. I am a 29-year-old medical student (about halfway to becoming fully qualified), husband, father of two children, ‘optimist’ and rower on the German national team. Had it not been for an untimely outbreak of Covid, which uprooted the German men’s sculling team before the season finale, I would have raced in the men’s quad at this year’s world championships. My goal is to win a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
