France’s Orange Marine has placed the 1,800dwt cable layer Sophie Germain in service as a replacement vessel for the 40-yearold Raymond Croze. The new 8,000gt ship, which utilises a hybrid propulsion system driving Azipod propellers to provide a speed of 14.5 knots, was completed by Sri Lanka ’s Colombo Dockyard to a design furnished by Norway’s Vard. It has been fitted with three cable tanks capable of carrying both fibre optic and power cables.
