Heather Kokesch Del Castillo was a health coach and nutritionist living and working in California. She obtained a certificate in holistic health coaching f rom the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (Professional Wellness Alliance n.d.). She moved to Florida where she continued operating her health coaching and nutritionist business. In California, her business had operated inside the law. However, in Florida she was subject to legal consequences that required her to cease the nutritional consulting aspect of her health coaching business and ultimately close the business because the title of Nutritionist is legally protected (Saunders 2022a).
Health coaches are not regulated in any way. I’ve written before about the need for regulating the title of “health coach” and why it’s important for consumers and patients (Suleta 2023). People who consult with a health coach assume that the coach is appropriately educated and trained to assist with their health goals. However, due to the unregulated nature of the profession, that is not necessarily the case.
Health coaches often offer nutritional guidance and advice (Cleveland Clinic 2021) and may also identify as nutritionists or otherwise claim to offer nutritional counseling. In some states, the title of “nutritionist ” is unregulated, and in these states “anyone with an interest in diet or nutrition may call themselves a nutritionist ” ( Wartenberg 2020).
