This issue’s guide is a great opportunity to show off a different element of miniature painting. When most people talk about this variety of painting they think of tabletop wargaming; not often do people think of board games. Whilst a good chunk do make use of meeples or card tokens, a great many include plastic miniatures and these are a great opportunity to add a special touch to that board game. To show what I mean let's take a look at Jim Henson's Labyrinth: The Board Game from River Horse.
The game comes with five characters from the popular ‘80s movie: Jareth, the goblin king; Sarah; Hoggle; and Ludo and Sir Didymus. Each one is a single plastic piece and, as a result, the quality and detail is not so great, but not when compared with figures from other board games. However, they have done a fantastic job of imbuing them with all the characteristics of their movie counterparts, meaning instant recognition if you're a fan of the film. Let's take a look at how I painted them...

TECHNIQUE – DRYBRUSHING
Drybrushing is a quick and easy method of adding shading, particularly on any rough surface such as fur. The only things you need are a drybrush and a piece of tissue. Here's a simple guide to how it is done...
Stage 1
Instead of applying paint straight to the miniature instead brush across a piece of tissue until there appears to be very little paint on the brush
Stage 2
Pull the brush across the miniature. You'll notice the paint only being applied to the raised areas and only in very small amounts.
Stage 3
This gives a good look with minimal effort. You can even add some highlights over the top using the same technique or experiment with the amount of paint on the brush.
JARETH, THE GOBLIN KING
Stage 1
Begin Jareth by basecoating his trousers with Celestra Grey.
Stage 2
Once the basecoat is dry add a wash of Seraphim Sepia.
Stage 3
Once the wash is dry add a layer of Celestra Grey. Leave the recessed areas the original colour.
