When an eight-year-old Letícia Bufoni first started to skateboard in São Paulo, Brazil – the only girl among boys – it would have been impossible to imagine that more than 20 years later she’d be kickflipping a dinosaur skeleton in London’s Natural History Museum alongside the leading lights of the international and UK women’s scenes. But, as the champion skateboarder and this month’s cover star proves, perseverance can take you to great places. This is a lesson that Belgian cycling champion Wout van Aert has learnt on his mission to conquer multiple disciplines against the world’s best competitors. “I always want to give it a go,” he says. “A lot of people don’t try it, because they think they can’t.” We join him in the Spanish mountains to find out how this attitude is paying dividends.
