DEFYING GRAVITY: CORBYN CARRIES ON
The Tories achieved the first by-election gain by a sitting government in thirty five years last week, when they captured the Cumbrian seat of Copeland. Labour had held the seat continuously for eighty three years: the last Tory MP
for Copeland was born in 1879. Theresa May hailed the victory as proof that her
government “delivers for everyone across the whole country”. Labour took some comfort from managing to hold on to the seat of Stokeon-Trent Central in another by-election, in the face of a determined challenge from UKIP.
Jeremy Corbyn said he took his “share of responsibility” for the disappointing Copeland result, but insisted he had no plans to resign as Labour leader, and urged his party to fight on.
