Described by Gruff Rhys as “a gigantic figure”, singer, songwriter and poet David R Edwards came to prominence as the frontman of Welsh post-punks Datblygu. He and schoolmate T Wyn Davies formed the band in Cardigan in 1982, with multi-instrumentalist Patricia Morgan joining a couple of years later. The band, with Edwards vocalising mostly in Welsh, caught John Peel’s attention with their 1986 EP, “Hwgr-Grawth-Og”. A full-length debut, Wyau, landed in 1988. Edwards balanced Datblygu with the odd collaboration, most notably 1992’s LL.LL v T.G. MC DRE, conceived with T Gwydr and electronica outfit Llwybr Llaethog. He and Morgan disbanded Datblygu in the mid-’90s, but returned in 2012. They issued a final album, Cwm Gwagle, last year. Super Furry Animals covered “Y Teimlad” on 2000’s Mwng and frontman Rhys told Nation.Cymru that, “His contribution to the Welsh language can’t be overestimated and his work with Datblygu serves as a focal point for its vibrant counter-culture.”
