SUBSETS – THOSE SOMETIMES THRILLING, SOMETIMES ANNOYING LITTLE BREAKS IN TOPPS BASEBALL SETS FROM THE 1950S-1990S SERVED MULTIPLE PURPOSES: INFORM/EDUCATE, ENTERTAIN AND BREAK UP THE MONOTONY OF POSES

Like any major television network during the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s, CBS devoted Saturday morning programming to children’s shows.

In most cases, that meant airing animated cartoons or kid-friendly live-action shows, from 8 a.m. to at least noon. Children absorbed a four-hour stream of sight gags, slapstick and humorous heroes and villains, from “Tom & Jerry” to “Shazam!”

But in between the “Bugs Bunny and Road Runner Hour” and “Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space,” CBS slipped in a bit of reality amid the monsters and mayhem.

“In the News,” an actual news show, aired between cartoons from 1971-86. Just two minutes in length, “In the News,” covered topical events of the day in a way that children could understand, from agriculture to politics to world affairs. The video segments presented a stark contrast to the animated chaos of “Heckle and Jeckle” and “Speed Buggy.” Much in the same way, Topps mixed news-oriented cards into its sets throughout the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s.

Collectors call these topical cards “subsets,” and children - I’m speaking from experience here - either loved them or hated them.
