Head Space
STAR LETTER
Simon Whaley’s feature Productivity Leap (WM, Feb) resonated, as his thoughts on how brain clutter stifled creativity were spot on for me. Wise Simon says ‘Clear the brain of the clutter and you give it the space in which to be creative.’ Six years ago my head was chock full of work clutter and I wasn’t writing anything because there wasn’t any room in my head for creative thoughts. I made a life-changing decision to leave my job and spend more time with my family. A wonderful side-effect was that suddenly my head emptied of those buzzing, nagging thoughts that once saturated it. I started daydreaming again, and with head space to think creatively the story ideas flooded in. That’s when my writing career seriously began.

Six years on I’m still writing but I need to consciously give myself head space to think creatively. My favourite day is Monday when I go for a lunchtime swim and simply allow my thoughts to wander. This is the time of the week when I can plot and plan out storylines. My weekly swim is the time when I work through what I’m going to write for the rest of the week. Walking and running also help, along with gardening and washing the dishes, as these all seem to declutter my head giving me that valuable creative thinking time.
