RESEARCH TIPS
COLD WAR
The Cold War, which continues to influence modern geopolitics, exerts a perennial fascination for writers. Dr Tarja Moles offers advice on how to research it accurately
After World War II, the relationship between the Western Bloc headed by the US and the Eastern Bloc led by the Soviet Union deteriorated into mutual distrust and military build-up. This state of affairs lasted until 1991 and was known as the Cold War.
The Cold War has continued to fascinate many fiction and nonfiction writers. Whether you’re interested in writing factual accounts or spy fiction, the good news is that there’s plenty of material to research and use in your writing.
The basics
If you’re not familiar with the Cold War, study the basics before you start writing. Although there’s a lot of information online, you might be better off starting with a basic textbook: it can provide you with a clear, structured presentation and analysis of the events. This way you don’t have to piece together information from separate sources.
