Under the Microscope

At the first light of dawn1 Kath carried the old dog to the camper bus,2 and plonked him into his bed3 by her husband’s feet; Robert frowned.4 He had been waiting in the driver’s seat for ten minutes, with the engine running.5
Kath turned and a blew a kiss to Carl, stood at his bedroom window.6 Their twenty two year old waved back, feebly.7 Saddened, Kath looked away and bit her lip.8 Shivering she dashed to her car,9 on the road, behind the bus.10 As she turned the ignition key snow began to fall.11
In convoy,12 the two vehicles made their way up the slippery hill, turned right and headed towards the link road, the A500 which would pass through Stoke and take them to junction 16 of M6, where they would head south.13
Sail Away Sail Away, the 1980’s hit song,14 was aptly playing on the car radio as they motored15 passed16 the turn-off for Festival Park. Kath’s imagination about the long journey ahead was already working overtime17 but then the bus’s lights flashed and Robert pulled in sharply.18 Kath tensed, and glanced at her watch;19 We’ve only been driving for five minutes!20
“Your dog has shit on my bus.” Robert ranted21 from the hard shoulder, as Kath pulled up.22 “It’s rolled under my clutch pedal.23 And it’s your dog.”24 Robert glared at Kath, as he pulled the poor, howling, creature towards her on a lead.25
