Dear Reader
As the nights draw in and a crisp chill settles over the land, many of us start turning to dark matters at this time of year (if only to delay thinking about the early-onset arrival of Christmas). With that in mind we’ve whipped up an intoxicating concoction of essential ingredients to help you cast a spooky spell on your readers: advice on what needs to go into a scary story, an exercise you can try with your writing group (or any other iron-willed volunteers!) and a look at a classic short story to show you how to get under the skin of your characters.
But don’t think all of this applies only to horror or supernatural stories. The techniques can provide useful inspiration whatever your genre: demonstrating a victim’s fear is an essential element of crime and thrillers, for example, or long-held phobias could inspire a subplot in a romance or chicklit novel. Besides, the boundaries are so blurred these days that it’s not unthinkable to blend elements of the supernatural into virtually any story – whether played straight or as the possibly psychosomatic imaginings of your characters. However you approach it, incorporating spooky elements in your stories is terrific fun, and terrific practice if it’s outside your usual style.
