RED DEVILS OVERCOME TRINITY
SALFORD RED DEVILS won back-to-back Super League games for the first time in 2021 with victory over a Wakefield Trinity side that struggled to convert chances and couldn’t shake off the tenacity of their hosts.
With both teams only naming 19-man squads ahead of the game due to a host of suspensions, injuries and Covid related isolation, and Joe Westerman having to withdraw at short notice on the morning of the game for Wakefield, fans would have been forgiven for wondering what sort of game they were going to get. But they need not have worried as a warm night brought some entertaining fare.
This encounter was played at Warrington’s Halliwell Jones Stadium due to the unavailability of the AJ Bell Stadium and Wakefield had the best of the opening quarter, leading 12-0 before the Red Devils chased them down.
“It was a tougher, resilient performance,” Salford coach Richard Marshall said, in contrast to the high scoring display at Castleford.
“We were both up against it in terms of injuries and suspensions. I didn’t think there was a lot between the two teams. In the second half there was a ten-minute spell when we managed to keep them off our line and they threw the ball into touch a couple of times and I thought we rocked them with our defence. Ultimately I think that is what won us the game. I think everyone had each other’s backs today.”
