GLAMORISING THE GAME
THE RFL and Super League should take away one very important lesson from the game between Wigan and Warrington in Las Vegas
(right)
and that is the importance of making the game look glamorous.
I struggle to pinpoint just one thing about the event that made it look better than the usual games we see on Sky or the BBC, but I believe a combination of factors made for an event that was a breath of fresh air.
Firstly, we had a pitch that was lush and green with bold ten-metre markings and the Super League logo prominently displayed in the centre.
Secondly, the graphics used by the NRL are clearer, brighter and pop off the screen. They really are much better than what we're used to with our domestic channels.
Thirdly, the cameras. Whether it was the angles, height or number used by the broadcasters it made the game look bigger, despite being played on a narrower field. You got a real sense of the athleticism of the players, the range, power and accuracy of the passing and also an appreciation of really how high a high kick goes.
I would go so far as to say it was the first time outside of the big NRL games or State Of Origin matches that a Rugby League fixture has looked as good as a something you'd see in the Champions League football or an NFL game.
I really do hope others saw this too and realise how important it is to really make the Super League name and the competing team's identities strong and exciting.
