ETYMOLOGY
THIS MONTH’S WORD OF THE MONTH IS “ETYMOLOGY”
Etymology is the study of the history and origin of words and the way they’ve changed throughout history. The word etymology itself comes from two Greek words: “étumon” (which means “true sense”), and “logia” (which means “study”). The origin of words can be fascinating.
Modern-day English words are from a variety of sources. Some come from people’s names. For example, a “sandwich” originates from John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich. The story goes that in 1762, while he was playing a game of cards, John asked for a piece of meat to be served between slices of bread. Apparently, he didn’t want to disturb the game.
