Online security in the quantum era
Given the vast power of quantum computers, there are concerns that they’ll break the current systems of encryption used to protect sensitive data. Shor’s algorithm, created in the mid–1990s, showed how quantum physics could break RSA encryption (the type that uses two different but linked keys to encrypt and decrypt data), as well as Elliptic Curve Cryptology (ECC). That’s why cybersecurity experts are working on new quantum secure protocols —or so–called post–quantum cryptology.
