BROWN SUGAR - Kelly Rowland
Posted 17 July 2015
Multi-platinum, international awarding winning artist and perfomer is only half her description. She is also an accomplished actress, model, and member of one most successful female music groups of all time.
We sat down with our girl Kelly Rowland for some much needed girl chat as she now adds motherhood to her already extensive resume.
Q: Tell us a little about your collaboration with Dreft campaign?
A: I’m on board with Dreft and really excited about it because it happened really organically. They found out how much I love Dreft and how obsessed I am with washing my babies clothes with Dreft. I was so obsessed with the scent and before he got here I was washing my clothes with Dreft! Preparing his baby bags to get him home from the hospital with Dreft. We are no longer in the newborn Dreft phase; we are now in the active baby Dreft phase. And now he’s getting in to his little messes and starting to crawl around and get baby food. The Dreft active baby actually kills around 99 percent of stains. It’s pretty awesome; I’m really excited to be a part of this campaign.
Q: What most surprised you about motherhood?
A: How big the messes are. I knew it was bad but it’s on another level sometimes. It kind of blows my mind; I mean he’s sitting there with the cutest smile on his face and then he makes a specific face and I know what that face is for. And I have to care for that face in so many ways, but it’s awesome. I love being a mom, I really do.
Q: What’s the most important lesson about motherhood?
A: It truly is a blessing to be a mother. Of course a baby doesn't come with an instruction manual and you have to learn everything on your own. And not put so much pressure on yourself and take everything one day at a time. I think before the baby got here I was thinking so much about that like “Oh my gosh, I’m going to have to raise a great man”. I was thinking about all these different things especially with the news and you know just so many different things that I’m thinking about. I’m glad that I’m conscious about those, but I also just wanted to enjoy my son and being a mom. Taking things one day at a time is the most important thing.
Q: Is your son musical at all?
A: He does love music. He loves to listen to it. He has been ever since I was carrying him and I remember putting a little Belly Buds on and him dancing to songs from the "Watch The Throne" album to be honest.
Q: Do you have a favorite song you sing to your son?
A: Right now we make up our own songs. If he's learning how to crawl, we just make little rap songs sing songs, it doesn't matter what it is. I make songs up about his name. It's very easy to make up a song about him. He's my little angel.
Q: Tell us about your return to TV with your BET show?
A: I am extremely excited about this show. I can’t wait till we really get into the thick of shooting. And it’s about time we have another group. It’s not around really, I think there’s like one or maybe two, but there are no new groups for this new generation. I’m really appreciative to all those folks who put their heads together to go and find the talent with groups before. And now I feel like I want to find it myself. It’s going to be great.
Q: What do you love about discovering new talent?
A: The excitement of it all and the development. Labels don’t really develop artist anymore with all due respect. They’ll find great YouTube stars and this great person who probably already had something jumping them selves and then they gravitate towards it and get behind it. But I want to actually nurture and really go in the way someone did with myself when I was a part of Destiny’s Child. Those are the most important moments actually in the developmental phase, that’s key.
Q: How will motherhood affect your music, if at all?
A: I’m having fun and I’m very happy. So to be honest, my music is very happy right now and not in a corny way, like in a fun way. Everything is really happy and good; I really can’t complain....
