Ubuntu Desktop 20.10 for Raspberry Pi
The grooviest gorilla since Donkey Kong
RASPBERRY PI OS is fine, generally. It’s a 32-bit OS though, and the 64-bit version is a work in progress, with features that don’t work. If you’ve got the 8GB version of the Pi 4, you might be frustrated at only being able to use 4GB of that lovely RAM, but Ubuntu has come to the rescue with a Pi port of 20.10 Groovy Gorilla that’s fully 64-bit, and a great desktop experience.
Does this make the Pi 4 (or the new 400 model) a proper desktop computer now, or do we have to wait for the inevitable port of Windows for that? Apple’s M1 processor shows what’s possible with ARM chips when you know what you’re doing with them, so perhaps we are looking at the future. Windows on ARM in laptops is coming along, and the power saving they offer over x86 is worth it if you don’t need or want the brute force.
