JAKE ONI
From titans of metal to new talent shaping the genre’s future, these songs have given the ONI mastermind food for thought
WORDS: ALEX DELLER
“I LOOK UP to the LAMB OF GOD guys. Randy [Blythe] has been through some shit and it didn’t change who he is. Mark [Morton, guitarist] has been through Hell and came out the other side swinging. It was hard for me to choose [just one track], but I like to sing Ghost Walking – in fact, a lot of these songs are ones I’d sing in karaoke. The World Without Us by ENTERPRISE EARTH has some prog vibes. I’m enjoying not doing prog after playing it for so long, but I’ll probably get bored of making metalcore one day and maybe go back to old ONI sounds. Enterprise Earth are really cool, and I like the new singer [Travis Worland] a lot. World… is dope, especially the beginning with the clean, tappy intro – it’s very ethereal, and the chorus is really huge. I’m a sucker for a good hook.
