The Police drummer recalls the awesome power of The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s Are You Experienced (Track, 1967)
It coincided with being 15 or 16, right at that age when you want to bust out and burn down everything. I’d grown up in Beirut, Lebanon. My daddy [Miles], who was a jazz musician himself before he was a CIA man, raised me to be a jazz musician. I thought music was trumpets and trombones and incredible Buddy Rich drumming. Then I was shipped off to Millfield boarding school in Street in Somerset, and one rainy afternoon my friend Lawrence Impey turned me onto the first Jimi Hendrix album.
