Post-traumatic stress disorder was first observed in soldiers returning from the horrors of war, but the diagnosis applies to survivors of sexual assault and other traumatic events. All told, about 8 percent of the U.S. population is coping with PTSD in some form. The condition can last decades and often hides in plain sight; recognizing its symptoms is the first step in recovery.
