The tenth season began encouragingly at the tail end of 1972 with 9.6 million people drawn to the promised return of past Doctors. The teamup proved as popular as the previous year’s long-awaited rematch against the Daleks, with Episode Four of The Three Doctors attracting almost 12 million viewers (perhaps helped by heavy rainfall across much of the UK). This was a peak for the Pertwee era and a figure the show hadn’t achieved since 1965.
