Women. Foundation garment stitched and quilted
■ Aotearoa/New Zealand has a strong history of making in textiles and fashion. Internationally, its most well-known contemporary textiles event is the annual World of Wearable Art spectacular (WOW), but not every artist working with garments makes wearable pieces. Ōtepoti/Dunedinbased maker Victoria McIntosh subverts and celebrates a particular strand of secondhand apparel, transforming discarded women’s underwear into stand-alone sculptural objects with provocative messages. These pieces convey McIntosh’s love of narrative and political passion, manifestations of her strength and her wit as she explores issues of women’s health and body image.
