>> ONGOING DEVELOPMENT
Linus Torvalds got 2022 off to a good start by announcing Linux kernel 5.16, which he had delayed by a week due to the holidays. The new kernel includes a number of changes. Among the bigger items is a new futex_waitv() system call (syscall), which will benefit gamers who use Proton to run Windows games on Linux. Windows has an OS primitive known as WaitForMultipleObjects that can be used to block (wait) for any of several different things to happen at once. Linux doesn’t have a similar operation, instead requiring many different calls to achieve the same thing.
