The shortlist for 2019’s Bird Photographer of the Year competition ranges far, featuring Australia’s pink galahs as well as Arctic terns that commute 12,000 miles between the poles. There’s much to wonder at in the UK, too, such as this shot by Janine Lee of gannets on a proverbial feeding frenzy off Noss in the Shetland Islands. Now’s the time to see the birds for yourself - dinghy trips run to the nature reserve over the summer, allowing you to ogle the 100,000-plus pairs of breeding seabirds that nest in its cliffs.
