Built in 1958, this monument by the river Tagus just west of ___________’s city centre marks the voyages of discovery launched by Prince Henry the Navigator, the lead statue here. Among the figures on the other side is ___________, who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the Earth. He died in 1521 before reaching home and, among other honours, he has a species of penguin named after him. Near the monument is a monastery that’s thought to be the birthplace of pastéis de nata, the mini ___________ whose global popularity grows by the year. Though ___________ is rarely counted among the world’s culinary superpowers, its trading legacy helped to bring the chilli pepper to Asia. The resulting crossover of tastes is best symbolised by vindaloo, the speciality of ___________, the country’s main colony in India.
