Locomotives in the Hunter Valley
Inspired by David Campbell’s article ‘I really do need to get out more’ that appeared in November 2015 RD, Locomotive & Rolling Stock Editor Peter Clark thought some additional information about the locomotives used in the Hunter may be of interest, and this illuminating article was the result.

Rail across Australia
In the wake of the final report by The Australian Transport Safety Bureau into the derailment of a Genesee & Wyoming Darwin to Adelaide train near Marryat, South Australia in July 2014 (see December RD, page 23) questions have been raised regarding the engineering standards of the North Australia Railway, particularly the weights of rail in use. We asked rail industry consultant Max Michell to give RD readers a brief overview of the current situation on both the NAR and the Trans.

Burnie Port Optimisation Project
At the end of November, Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure & Regional Development, Warren Truss, announced that the construction phase of the $12 million Burnie Port Optimisation Project had been completed. Chris Walters reports.

Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse Line
The annual spring racing carnival represents a busy operating period on the Flemington Racecourse line, during which time many who attend the numerous race meetings of the carnival choose to travel to and from the racecourse by train. Phil Green takes a look at the organised mayhem of Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday 3 November 2015.
