Snowdrop is one of the classic vessels providing the famous Mersey Ferries service between Liverpool and Birkenhead.
Birkenhead-based Cammell Laird are to build the first new ferry for the Mersey crossing from Liverpool Pier Head and Birkenhead Woodside since the 1960s. Liverpool City Regional Mayor Steve Rotherham welcomed the move, adding that it would ‘ensure the iconic ferry across the Mersey will continue to be enjoyed in the years to come.’ Full details have yet to be confirmed, but a display dedicated to the build of the ferry can be seen at Seacombe Terminal, and it will be updated regularly throughout the project. The new hybrid vessel is scheduled to enter service in 2026.
The present ferry fleet consists of Royal Iris of the Mersey and Snowdrop, which offer trips to Wallasey as well as visits to the Manchester Ship Canal. They offer a commentary on the Mersey’s iconic waterfront, and are promoted as one of Liverpool’s tourist attractions.
