This month’s story is epistolary – written in the form of letters. We are going to look at A Novel In Nine Letters by Dostoevsky and consider what this form of communication adds to the story telling and how important the subject of communication and miscommunication is. As always, you will benefit most if you read the story yourself; https://writ.rs/anovelinnineletters
The story, almost in its entirety, is told in the form of letters between the two main characters, Pyotr and Ivan, so all that we know about the story is in the content of the letters they exchange as one tries to track the other down in order to discuss a business transaction and a debt. The story is quite complex and you may have to read it more than once, and attempt to read between the lines, to truly appreciate what is going on.
