STEWART GETS TO IT!
FROM THE DISTANT PAST TO THE FUN-FILLED FUTURE, MATT STEWART DRAWS IT ALL
BY CHRIS MIXER
Matt Stewart reminds me of a reallife Indiana Jones. Before becoming a sketch card artist, Matt was an archaeologist, and those skills came in handy a few years ago when he drew for Upper Deck’s 2015 Dinosaurs card set. He was born in Missouri, moved to Canada at age 11, and now lives in Calgary, Alberta with his wife.
Non-Sport Update: Thanks for your time! How did you get started in sketch cards?
Matt Stewart: The first trading card company I worked for was Monsterwax (Monsters & Maniacs in 2014) and within three months I also started working for Leaf, Topps and Upper Deck. I’ve always loved drawing and one day I decided to Google some companies and apply for project work. It was pretty easy to find the contact info for most of these companies and I received responses fairly quickly. Upper Deck was a little different. One of their art directors actually contacted me about working on their projects. I’ve always been fairly active on social media, posting artwork on a daily basis. One of UD’s ADs saw my work, liked it, and offered me a project.
