Review by Robert Thicknesse Photography by Wilfried Hösl
Shostakovich certainly works the extremities: ultraviolence, the manic absurdity of priests and cops, the grinding final tragedy. It needs that whole range to work: subtract the raucous fun and the horror suffers too.
