STAR LETTER
Admiring the view early one morning from the a hill overlooking Lake Bala I was puzzled by a distant shape in the still water. Through binoculars I saw it was a swimmer’s red cap. I realised at that moment I wanted to be that swimmer. Encouraged by friends I moved from rather casual pool swimming to outdoor training and have now just realised my first ambition to swim the length of Bala. It has great resonance for me, it being the beautiful natural lake where we spent many childhood camping holidays. It’s given me great pleasure to be developing a new interest in my late 60s and am loving the social aspects: it’s so easy to chat to others at events and give support to one another. Retired but don’t wish to stand still? I’ve found outdoor swimming is invigorating physically, mentally and socially. The possibility of 10k has now quietly sneaked up on me so I am scanning your events listings and digesting your useful guidance on preparation. It could happen!

Swimmers’ problems!
I recently had the privilege of completing the Jubilee River swim on 11 June ‘17. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute! I think the reason why I love swimming outdoors so much is because you really cannot take yourself too seriously. Just look at these epic hat/forehead tan lines!
