Add some flash light
Blend ambient light and flash for better results
Ideally, you want the subject to be backlit so that it is in silhouette before you switch on the flash

You may want to add a burst of flash to add light where there is none. A flashgun that you can take off camera will give both greater power and more creative options than a built-in flash unit.
