Celebrating 50 years of Phaedra, tonight’s performance unites and unifies the defining dimensions of Tangerine Dream past and present. Released in 1974, Phaedra was the German electronic music pioneers’ breakthrough album, achieving six-figure sales in the UK alone and marking the beginning of a long and fruitful period signed to Richard Branson’s Virgin label. It was DJ John Peel who first championed the band on these shores, citing 1973’s Atem as one of his albums of the year. With Phaedra, the Tangs honed and refined their aesthetic, adopting the more structured approach that would increasingly shape their sound in the ensuing years.
