Discovering Jadis

Jadis were part of the original neo-prog movement in the early 80s, when they supported IQ and Pendragon, and later opened for Marillion on their Clutching At Straws tour. Since then, they’ve recorded 10 studio albums and have released a further five live and rarities CDs.

The band are relentless in their quest to continue playing and recording, despite many personnel changes over the years. Their current line-up – comprising Gary Chandler (guitar, vocals), Martin Orford (keyboards, backing vocals), Stephen Christey (drums) and Andy Marlow (bass) – has been in place since 2012, although they’ve known each other for much longer.

They’re still going strong!

IN MEMORY OF MIKE RATLEDGE
Soft Machine’s co-founder and driving force, Mike Ratledge played a key role in helping to lay a firm foundation for what would become the Canterbury scene. The organist’s clever compositions and creative sound – he was encouraged by Jimi Hendrix to add a fuzz pedal to his kit – enhanced the Softs’ psychedelic, and later free-jazz, style. We pay tribute to the influential musician, who died after a short illness in February.
Wond’ring Aloud
Not ones for living in the past, Jethro Tull are back with their 24th album, and third in three years, Curious Ruminant. Billed as one of their best yet, it finds frontman Ian Anderson embracing his love of sci-fi and issuing a warning about climate change. Prog catches up with the septuagenarian flautist to discuss building on the band’s legacy, hamming it up for the crowd and making sure all the semiquavers are in the right place.
Playing To The Gallery
In 1975, Jethro Tull decamped to the French Riviera to record their eighth studio album, Minstrel In The Gallery . As the record celebrates its half-century, Ian Anderson recalls the story behind its creation in between breaks in a lengthy touring cycle that would eventually lead to the departure of their zebra suit-wearing bassist Jeffrey Hammond.
Once a Cardiac…
There’s never been anyone quite like Cardiacs . Adored and detested in equal measures, they defied classification and their expansive line-up included musicians that continue to play a role in the modern world of progressive music. Bandmembers past and present, including Tim Smith’s brother Jim, keyboardist William D Drake and guitarist Kavus Torabi, look back over the group’s history and give an update on their long-awaited final studio album, LSD
Empire Of Ghosts
Second albums can often be difficult, but it seems that Leeds-based Ghost Of The Machine haven’t lost the harmony that informed their debut and have delivered a superb follow-up. Bandmembers Charlie Bramald, Scott Owens and Stuart McAuley tell Prog about Empires Must Fall and why they certainly don’t mind comparisons to Marillion and Genesis
Andy (And Alex) In The UNDERWORLD
Alex Lifeson’s post-Rush band Envy Of None make a very welcome return with their second album, Stygian Wavz , which takes its title from the River Styx in Greek mythology. Alex Lifeson and bassist Andy Curran invite Prog for a dip in their dark progressive-pop waters, where they discuss finding their feet, welcoming the muse and embracing a set of very different musical challenges.
The Dream Team
Voted third Best Bassist in this magazine’s 2024 Readers’ Poll, Jonas Reingold has released Transmutation , Karmakanic’s sixth studio album, in between extensive tour duties with Steve Hackett. Prog spoke to Reingold to discover how he gathered together its spectacular starry cast from across two continents.
Days Of Future Passed
Half a century on from the release of their first post-Damo Suzuki release, Soon Over Babaluma , Can remain one of the most unique bands out there. As their late-period live albums campaign continues, keyboard player Irmin Schmidt looks back on the creation of their fifth record and explores the genius of the krautrock pioneers.
Cry Freedom!
When Amplifier released Hologram in 2023, it was a taste of things to come, and now the long-awaited main course, Gargantuan , is finally here. Mainman Sel Balamir reveals the story behind an album that released him from the constraints of a standard band format and nearly ended up as a four-hour banquet.
The Nightfly
The last few years have been challenging for Iamthemorning’s talented pianist Gleb Kolyadin , but his latest solo album has given him some respite. The Russian pianist and composer tells Prog about his new life in the UK, the inspiration behind Mobula and why making music has been his therapy.
Imprisoned In The Concept?
New York proggers, Coheed And Cambria are reaching the end of their epic, 12-album Amory Wars concept with The Father Of Make Believe . It’s found mainman Claudio Sanchez in a precarious position as he contemplates his creative decisions and the future. This all makes for the band’s most out-there album yet, and one that’s equal parts a sci-fi prog epic and personal tome of uncertainty. We found out more.
Don’t Mention The Vikings!
Nordic folk leaders Wardruna are back to pay tribute to the natural world on their latest album, Birna . Mainman Einar Selvik discusses she-bears, Glastonbury Festival and why you will never catch him making the same album twice.
