Inuk author Aviaq Johnston considers herself very modern – but her novels are steeped in traditional storytelling

GROWING UP in Igloolik, Nunavut, Aviaq Johnston loved listening to traditional Inuit stories and reading young adult books. But she rarely saw northern stories relected in the books she loved – until she wrote her own Inuit YA series, starting with Those Who Run in the Sky (Inhabit Media) in 2017. The novel introduces series hero Pitu, a talented young hunter who inds himself stranded in the spirit world, trapped with a cranky, longlost shaman and dodging terrifying creatures.
