The 2021 Australasian Rail Industry Awards
The outstanding achievements of the rail industry were celebrated at the Australasian Rail Industry Awards in a virtual ceremony livestreamed across the country on Thursday 4 November. As long-time media partner in the yearly event, Railway Digest was ‘there’!

The contemporary Muswellbrook-Gulgong Railway
The Muswellbrook-Gulgong Railway, otherwise known as the Ulan Line, is a unique combination of heavy-haul railroading and branch line quaintness, but it is not just the numerous coal trains, bridges and tunnels that make this line special. The railway passes through fine grazing land that is shrouded by vast sandstone cliffs on the northern edge of the Wollemi National Park. Stephen Miller frequently visits the line and he discusses the background, the operations and his experiences photographing trains on the Muswellbrook-Gulgong Railway.

Where BHP and FMG meet
In July last year, Phil Cross braved the heat to spend a fascinating two hours watching and photographing heavy ore trains at the overpass where the Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) railway crosses over the BHP Iron Ore railway just north of the Hillside – Woodstock Road in the Mungina area of the Pilbara

A new bogie design for the United C44 ACi
The United C44ACi is the numerically largest class of diesel locomotive currently operating on the national standard gauge network, and is also the only type of locomotive currently manufactured in Australia. The recently delivered QUBE QL class units feature a new, lighter, more sophisticated bogie known as the ‘Flexicurve’. Peter Clark takes a look at the new bogie’s development and performance.
