DB No. 102 001 at Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof with RE4023, the 13.08 to Munich on July 6. SHAUN WALLACE
EIGHT years after they were ordered and five years late, the new Škoda-built double deck trains for high-speed regional services between Nuremberg and Munich finally entered service on May 5. The six 189km/h double deck push-pull trains, each powered by new Class 102 (Škoda model F109 E3) 15kVAC locos based on the earlier multi-system Class 380 locos supplied to Czech Railways, replace push-pull trains converted from older Intercity coaches hauled by DB’s main long-distance Class 101 loco type. The new trains have 679 seats, 26 of which are first class. DB Regio’s contract to run the high-speed regional service which uses the Nuremberg- Ingolstadt high-speed line runs until December 2028.
