Nepal (re)gains international rail link from April
TRAINS from India to Kurtha in Nepal began operation on April 2, using Indian-built DEMUs owned by Nepali Railways. The 34.9km route from Jaynagar in Bihar State has been rebuilt to 1676mm gauge.
The line was originally built in 1937 by the British colonial government in India, as a 2ft 6in gauge line connecting Jaynagar with forests in Nepal to move timber to India. Partly closed in 2001 following damage from heavy rain, rebuilding to broad gauge began in 2018 for the section from Janakpur (Nepal) with Jaynagar (India).
