More on ‘Lazarus locos’
I FOUND the series on ‘Lazarus Locomotives’ (November) very interesting, and I salute those who have worked so hard for locos such as Tornado and Betton Grange.
However, as well as questioning the value for money of some of the newbuild endeavours, I wonder why it is we, as a movement, choose to overlook some wonderful existing locos that are not in steam?
I appreciate that Evening Star is no longer allowed on the mainline, but Green Arrow would be I am sure. I hear perhaps it needs a new monoblock, which would be costly but still less than a newb uild.Simi larly, woul dn’t it be wonderful to see locos like the Ivatt Atlantic No. 251 or, in my hometown, the beautiful Glen Douglas, back in steam?
As a volunteer on the Talyllyn, I recognise the question about originality, with our Talyllyn and Dolgoch now containing few original parts. But to me they still have lineage back to their build dates. Wouldn’t all locos have had new/ rebuilt components at some point?
