INSIDE THE PLAY STATION
Few consoles can claim to have revolutionised video games in the way that the PlayStation did. Sony’s brand power and marketing clout widened the console market demographic and ended the dominance of its traditional games-focused competitors. But it wasn’t just a marketplace revolution – the PlayStation was an exceptional piece of technology, coupled with an approach to third-party development that supported a huge range of hit games. Rather than competing with the SNES and other established machines, Sony would eventually develop a 3D-capable console, inspired by the success of Virtua Fighter in Japanese arcades. The simple fact that a company of Sony’s stature was taking an interest in the console market was a noteworthy development in itself.
