Kara Kohler

American sculler Kara Kohler went from complete novice to 2012 Olympian in the US women’s quad in just three seasons. Eight years on, after switching her focus to the single scull in 2017, Kohler’s break-through moment came last year when she won bronze in the single at the 2019 World Rowing Championships in Linz.

How has this year been for you?

Challenging. I think I was already struggling before the pandemic; really since the Worlds in 2019. I was emotionally and physically drained after last summer. By February I was ill and Olympic trials for the single were a month away. Actually, it was a blessing to have the extra time to figure out my emotional and physical health. It has been hard to find motivation when racing is so far away. But it definitely helps being around the team.
