EARWIG AND THE WITCH
Ghibli enters the CG dimension
There are two things to know about Earwig And The Witch: it’s the first fully 3D CG film from celebrated anime powerhouse Ghibli; and it was first released in Japan as a TV movie. So if it comes across as a little tentative that’s because, despite director Gorô (son of Hayao) Miyazaki’s protestations to the contrary, the film does feel an awful lot like an R&D project: trying to stamp an anime ethos into CGI, rather than simply aping Pixar. It only partially convinces.
