ALSO OUT
There’s lots more books we couldn’t quite fit in. Stephenie Meyer’s MIDNIGHT SUN (out now, Little Brown) retells the events of Twilight from Edward’s perspective. (If you’re thinking “Sounds like EL James’s Grey”, Meyer had the idea first, but paused work in 2008 after 12 chapters leaked). You’ll either buy this or not, and no critique we could offer would make a scrap of difference… Station Eleven author Emily St John Mandel’s latest isTHE GLASS HOTEL (out now, Picador). This tale of the lives impacted by the collapse of an investment scam has a hint of the paranormal (there are ghosts), but is probably not quite our bag. A boy who ekes a living picking treasures from the Living Mud is sold to the Master of Mordew, who derives his magical power from feeding on the corpse of God, in Alex Phelby’s dark fantasyMORDEW (13 August, Galley Beggar Press). Peter Newman’s The Deathless trilogy, set in a world of crystal castles and winged knights, concludes withTHE BOUNDLESS (out now, HarperVoyager). Our reviewer called book one “compelling, vivid and skillfully crafted”. Kelvin Universe TreknovelMORE BEAUTIFUL THAN DEATH (20 August, Pocket Books)sees Kirk escorting Sarek to a dilithium-rich planet under siege from dark-energy “demons”. Finally,THEY DREW AS THEY PLEASED VOLUME SIX (out now, Chronicle) concludes Disney historian DidierGhez’s coffee-table series. It includes art by and chats with creatives on the likes of The Lion King and Frozen. Phew!
