Among the many strengths tech billionaires possess, a sense of irony isn’t one of them. In an attempt to distract from claims that The Artist (Formerly Known as Facebook) has come to represent a dystopian sci-fi villain, Mark Zuckerberg has announced Meta aims to create the world’s fastest AI supercomputer, dubbed both ominously and blandly ‘Research SuperCluster’.
Admittedly it may prove a more reliable hand on the tiller than Boris Johnson – one imagines it could make basic decisions without a daily elevenses of cake, wine and lockdown-breaking. But I have to say I trust Meta-book with the power of Skynet about as far as I’d trust Vladimir Putin in a boundary dispute over our respective gardens.
