In this history of the Spiel des Jahres, the most important prize for tabletop games in the world, spare a thought for Rüdiger Dorn. A German designer since the 1990s, he’s made the shortlist for the award four times in twelve years: in 2005 for Jambo, in 2007 for Arkadia, in 2012 for Las Vegas, and in 2016 for Karuba. Not only that, he’d actually won the Kennerspiel des Jahres, the prize for more complex games, for Istanbul in 2014. So, when the 2018 shortlist was announced and once again his name was on it, this time for the critically praised Luxor, Dorn must have thought that his time as bridesmaid was finally over and this year, surely, glory would be his.
