The magic of snow and frost

Low Winter Sun, watercolour on Saunders Waterford High White Rough 140lb (300gsm), 7× 10in (18× 25.5cm). Looking into the sun, I liked the dramatic contrast of the dark trees against the hazy warm light and the broken cool shadows on the frosty ground

The winter landscape beneath a heavy frost or blanket of snow becomes an irresistible subject, full of atmosphere and transforming familiar scenes into something unique. For the watercolour painter, it becomes more important than ever to plan ahead carefully, reserve and exploit the white paper to capture these transient and magical effects.

A touch of frost
